Start with the material’s instructions
Prusa discusses dehydrators as one possible approach but also identifies limits in drying equipment. The relevant target is the process specified for the exact filament, not a generic setting copied for all PLA, PETG or nylon. Check both the required temperature and duration.
Check the reel as well as the filament
A filament’s process requirement does not establish that its spool can tolerate the same conditions. Confirm the reel construction and any limits from the supplier. A large chamber is not useful if the loaded spool cannot be supported without obstructing the documented airflow arrangement.
A dial is not a chamber measurement
The selected temperature and the temperature around a loaded spool may differ. If the equipment is suitable for the application, assess it using an appropriate documented measurement method. Do not assume the highest number on a product page establishes uniform, controlled conditions throughout a modified chamber.
Avoid an improvised conversion
Check the dehydrator maker’s permitted uses before proceeding. Do not bypass temperature controls, modify electrical components or block ventilation to reach a higher target. If the required process is outside the equipment’s documented capability, choose suitable equipment instead. Keep non-food processing separate from food preparation.
Compare the complete alternative
Include suitable trays or supports explicitly permitted by the equipment maker, monitoring needs, storage after drying and any loss of warranty or support. Compare that usable arrangement with a purpose-built dryer that documents the required range and spool capacity. A cheap appliance is not necessarily a cheaper supported workflow.
Decide from the unresolved requirement
